“I love teaching University of Utah students and helping them learn about, appreciate, and protect the beautiful outdoor landscapes of Utah. The scholarship will allow me to assure that I keep my skills and my certification up to date and meet not only professional goals but also industry standards in outdoor education. Assuring a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for my students is key. Discussing wilderness medicine with them and noting my level of proficiency and certification status allows me to role model for them. I can discuss risk management, planning and preparation, and proper skill development. This is a primary goal as I teach and lead students in the field - to inspire them to seek more knowledge and develop a higher level of skill and comfort. Becoming recertified will allow me to continue to teach for my department, add to my experience level, and provide the opportunity to teach additional courses in the future.”
